Introduction:

When a computer slows down or keeps lagging when working on your computer, this makes you disgusted. But this may happen when your computer is old, applications running are newer, or your computer's memory is low as compared to the applications you are running. But, there are some ways by which multi-tasking in a computer becomes easy and efficient, also lagging free.

Steps:

The steps mentioned below are for WINDOWS® users only since MAC OS and LINUX are highly optimised as compared to WINDOWS. They are much faster and efficient than Windows.

#1. Change Performance Settings:

This can be done by the following ways:
  1. Open up Computer, right-click and open Properties.
  2. Choose Advanced System Settings from the left panel.
  3. Under Advanced tab and on Performance panel open up Settings.
  4. Then choose Adjust for best performance.
  5. Apply your changes and you are done.
This will increase the performance of your computer considerably. Note: These will disable some of the shortcuts such as Windows key + Tab to increase performance.

#2. Disable Startup Applications:

For Windows XP, Vista and 7-
  1. Open up the RUN dialog from the start menu or by pressing Windows key + R from your keyboard.
  2. Type msconfig in the text field and press enter.
  3. Go to Startup tab and there will be displaying the startup programs that slow your computers boot up time.
  4. Uncheck the programs that are not essential.
  5. It may appear to Restart your computer, do so.
For Windows 8, 8.1 and 10-
  1. Open up Task Manager. There are many processes to open TaskManager, but the simplest one is right-clicking the bottom bar and choose Task Manager. Alternatively, you can open Control Panel, search for Task Manager and open it or you can open Command Prompt and then type taskmgr to open it.
  2. Navigate to Startup Tab and uncheck the options that are not necessary for the time of startup.
Note: If you do not know which one to uncheck this step is not for you.
This step will boost you boot up time and cleans up memory for efficient computing.

#3. Uninstall Unused Programs:

Uninstalling programs that you never or rarely use is a great way to boost your performance. Try uninstalling some of them from your pc.
  1. Open up Control Panel.
  2. Open up Uninstall Programs.
  3. Select a program and uninstall it that you are not using.

#4. Check for malware:

If there is malware then it may slow down your pc. So, check out some antivirus software. I would recommend you to use Microsoft Security Essentials which is free. If you don't want to use third-party antivirus software, you can use Windows Defender, update it every day since new types of malware are created every day. And scan your computer.

For Windows 7 and above:
  1. Open up Control Panel.
  2. Search for Windows Defender.
  3. Open it, update it if available, then scan your computer malware.
  4. You can update Windows for security updates.
  5. Go to Control Panel and open up Windows Updates.
  6. Check for Update and install it if available.
For Windows XP users, there is no scope of security against malware since security updates have been stopped by Microsoft for Windows XP in 2013.

#5. Use Alternative Apps

Software Applications such as MS Office, IE, Adobe Reader, Chrome, etc. uses plenty of memory, reducing the capability of multitasking in a computer. There are alternatives to it, though you would not like to have them they are almost similar using less memory.

IE, Chrome: These web browsers takes a plenty of memory in our RAM. Since Chrome has extensions which lead to usage of memory as the number of extensions increases. Alternatives to them are Mozilla Firefox and Opera.

MS Office: MS Office is also a huge space taker in our RAM since it has a large number of tools and utilities. Alternative to it is Libre Office which is free and open-source.

Adobe Reader: It is also a hazard to our RAM. So, take the right path and choose other free pdf readers online.

Windows Media Player: It is also of similar type taking much space of our RAM. Change to alternatives, such as KM Player or VLC Media Player.

Conclusion:

If the above steps do not increase your computer's performance and efficiency, then try upgrading your CPU units, such as RAM which will give you an instant boost. Try switching from Windows to Mac or Linux.
